C10001 Maths for collision investigators

Introduction

Collision investigation involves a knowledge of mathematics.  At UCPD level you will need to have studied to GCSE level (and remembered what you learnt!).  Both the distance learning and classroom route involve an early maths assessment (end of week 9 distance learning and end of week 1 classroom based) which you are required to pass.

CI101 is a six week distance learning module for those enrolled or about to enroll on the UCPD and who feel that they need to refresh their mathematics.  The module is designed to give you sufficient mathematics to successfully complete the first assessment on the UCPD.

There is no charge for this course.

What you will study

Arithmetic, algebra, geometry and trigonometry in the areas relevant to the UCPD.

Entry requirements

This course assumes that you have studied mathematics in the past attaining a GCSE pass or equivalent.

Study method

Online course with weekly tutorials.

What you will need

You will need a scientific calculator, a computer and access to the internet and some form of headphones or earphones. We recommend any Casio calculator with a 'Natural Display'.

Teaching and assessment

This is an Online course run from our VLE. The course is designed for you to study from home or the workplace. There are live weekly Online tutorials which are recorded just in case you cant make it. At the end of the course you can log onto and take the Online assessment. This assessment can only be taken once and is time constrained. At the end of the assessment you can print a certificate as proof of your score. As a guide,

• A score of 80% or more usually means you will not have problems with the maths on the UCPD.
• A score in the 70's usually means that with some hard work on the course you will be OK with the maths on the UCPD.
• A mark in the 60's means the UCPD is doable but you are going to have to put in some more pre-course study.
• 60 marks or below means you are not yet at the required level. Consider some maths coaching or a GCSE course first.
